Sometimes it happens that Outlook does its own and does not want to either work! By this, I mean that when you launch Outlook it does not open correctly and displays the following message:
“Microsoft Outlook has stopped working”
There was a problem that the program stopped working correctly. Windows will close this program and tell you if a solution is available.
In this case, the first thing to do is to go to the Event Viewer (applications section) to look at what is causing the problem. In this case, here is the error message:
The program OUTLOOK.EXE version 14.0.6117.5001 has stopped interacting with Windows and has been closed.
To determine if additional information is available, view the problem history in the Action Center.
Process ID: ca8
Start Time: 01ce02b814ebd300 End
Application Path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE
Report ID: c75a7ad7-6eac-11e2-9b8c- 444553544200
And like many error messages of this type, it is quite incomprehensible, however, after some research, we can read on the internet that it is an archive (pst file) which is corrupt and which can cause the program to crash. If you don’t have an archive, you can go a little further down to read other Outlook troubleshooting solutions.
How to repair a PST archive?
To repair a PST archive it’s very simple, Microsoft to leave a small utility in the Office installation folder. You will, therefore, find the utility Scanpst.exe in the directory: C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX\ (this depends on the office version you are using).
Launch this utility and add the archive you want to analyze.
The Microsoft inbox repairer will analyze the file
After the analysis, if there is an error, the tool will offer to start the repair. Remember to check the “Create a backup of the analyzed file before repair” to have a solution to go back if there is a problem during the repair. Attention, it can be very long depending on the size of the archive, that’s why it can be useful to limit the size of PST archives.
Once your PST file is repaired, launch Outlook again, it should open without any problem. (It was my case!)
Other troubleshooting solutions
There can be many other types of problems on Outlook; here are some ways to fix Outlook.
- Launch Outlook in Safe Mode: Indeed, sometimes these are plugins, which prevent the proper functioning of Outlook, in this case, it is advisable to try a safe start. If it starts in safe mode then you can clean up in the add-ons. To launch Outlook in safe mode, use the “Outlook.exe/safe” command in the “Run” dialog box (Windows + R)
- Delete/rename the Outlook settings folder: This will allow you to completely reset the Outlook settings, but also to restart the download of mails to the server. These folders are in c:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook and c:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.
Personally, I prefer to rename the directory, in this case, Outlook will create a new directory (thinking that it no longer exists) and therefore we will have the possibility of going back if there is a problem.
With this, the problem of MS Outlook not working can be fixed, but in case, the problem continues to appear, then you should consult Outlook experts because they can assist you with this particular issue in the most suitable way.
